The rise and politically motivated fall of the Photo League (1936-1951)
ORDINARY MIRACLES: THE PHOTO LEAGUE’S NEW YORK, narrated by Campbell Scott, is a feature documentary which tells the story of the Photo League, (1936–1951), which for fifteen years functioned as the vital nerve center of the American documentary movement in an era when the camera was seen—in James Agee’s words, as “the central instrument of our time.” The film pays tribute to photographers including Lewis Hine and Weegee, and features interviews with Jerome Liebling, Sol Libson, Rebecca Lepkoff, Morris Engel, Joe Schwartz, Walter Rosenblum, Rosalie Gwathmey, Vivian Cherry and Erica Stone.
