Logline

The war through the lens of soldier-photographers

As memories of World War II fade and veterans of that distant conflict dwindle, it is vitally important that the record of their experiences be preserved and cherished. Now, for the first time in the eighty years since the war ended, we have recovered—through rare photographs, never before seen motion-picture footage and and recently discovered personal letters—the experiences of a front-line eyewitness: highly decorated U.S. Army Signal Corps combat cameraman Walter Rosenblum, who, with his fellow cameramen, recorded the war in Europe from D-Day to the liberation of Dachau, with skill, empathy, and unflinching courage.

Why This Film

A First-Person
Resistance to Fascism

This project began with a traveling photography exhibition in 2016 and evolved over nine years into a full-scale archival investigation. With support from international curators and the National Archives, Nina Rosenblum and Daniel Allentuck uncovered rare materials—including Rosenblum’s 16mm reels and a trove of letters written to his wife during wartime.
